Jerzy Pietrucha, CEO PIETRUCHA International received yesterday the BENYOWSKY Praemium – the prize for contribution to the construction of the Polish-African economic relations based on partnership and cooperation. The occasion for this celebration is the ongoing Lodz POLANDAFRIKA Congress’ 2015, organized by the Regional Chamber of Commerce – Lodz. The award honors the company’s previous activity on the African markets (we write about this in more detail on the PIETRUCHA Group’s website) and to promote the destination among Polish entrepreneurs.
The choice of Maurice Beniowskiego as the patron of the prize is interesting to the extent that the hero himself is ambiguous character. Pole, subject to the Emperor of Austria and born in Vrbov, on the present border between Slovakia and Hungary, soldier, adventurer, cosmopolitan, author loud diaries, in which, however, gives a lot of information inconsistent with the established later facts of his life. Participant of the Bar Confederation, and as a result he was sent to Kamchatka. He escaped from there with a group of other exiles on board of the ship, to the many swashbuckling adventures to get to Madagascar, where for some time he was the governor on behalf of the Royal Government of France. He resigned from this function for another escapade – this time to America – that for some time again to return to Madagascar and be elected its king. There he made his life.
No matter how you judge this as a fact it is that he was a hero of works by Juliusz Słowacki and Wacław Sieroszewski, a few streets of his name is on the Polish coast and in the capital of Madagascar (there is even a monument anyway), and W. Ellis at work “Three trips to Madagascar,” he wrote of him: “The views Beniowski ahead of an era, and bypass his with Malgashes was more enlightened and more equitable than bypass other Europeans who came to this island”
